Iran 1st mealworm farm inaugurated in Sistan and Baluchestan province

Zahedan – the head of Sistan and Baluchestan's Agricultural Organization inaugurated Iran's first home-based mealworm farm, marking a significant step toward establishing the region as the nation's premier insect protein production center.

 

Paying a visit to Hamun County, Alireza Dahmardeh announced the province's plans to scale up mealworm production as a sustainable solution for Iran's feed industry.

"What begins as a small pilot today could revolutionize tomorrow's livestock and poultry sectors," he said.

"Mealworms are the larvae of darkling beetles that serve as a nutrient-rich food source, packed with protein and fats, for a wide range of animals including poultry, fish and reptiles. Home-based mealworm farming represents a valuable cottage industry, particularly suitable for rural households as it requires no sophisticated equipment,” Dahmardeh said.
